Nominate a Deserving Colleague For Work at the Community Level

The American Legacy Foundation (Legacy) is a national public health foundation dedicated to keeping young people from smoking and helping all smokers quit. Along with broad-based national campaigns aimed at these twin goals – prevention and cessation - Legacy is devoted to community services through:  an extensive grants program, sponsorship support, and work with state and local tobacco control advocates.

Each year Legacy recognizes exceptional individuals who demonstrate leadership and courage in working toward a tobacco-free world by honoring them at the annual Legacy Honors fundraising event. The sixth annual event is scheduled for March 2009 in New York City.

Past winners include:
  • Gerry RainingBird (Chippewa Cree), a tobacco control leader who incorporated traditional and sacred use of tobacco in Native American Communities to develop resistance to commercial tobacco use;
  • Sherri Watson-Hyde, an advocate of tobacco control programs who has worked to educate, engage and empower minority communities and raise awareness of tobacco use;
  • Lourdes Baezconde-Garbanati, a researcher focused on community tobacco prevention and community cancer control among medically underserved communities with special emphasis on Hispanic/Latino population groups;
  • Carol O. McGruder, a community-based researcher and advocate who worked to design and implement changes to community norms around tobacco and one of the first individuals to address the tobacco industry’s marketing and advertising practices which target disadvantaged populations.
  • Tom Peterson, a physician, educator and activist who has worked to reduce and remove the negative effects of tobacco on those around him in the State of Michigan.

In the same spirit of excellence and commitment of past winners, Legacy is now accepting nominations for exceptional individuals engaged in tobacco control in their communities.

A five member committee comprised of tobacco control leaders will select the award winner with support from American Legacy Foundation staff.

Nominee Requirements:
  • A minimum of one year active work in the field of tobacco control – in particular, issues in support of American Legacy Foundation’s mission and goals
