Schroeder Institute

Current gaps in tobacco control include the slow speed of development of more effective interventions and the inordinate delay in translating existing research knowledge into applications for widespread adoption and science-driven policy.  Putting what we know into practice and policy is essential to reduce smoking prevalence in our nation. Legacy’s newly formed Schroeder Institute for Tobacco Research and Policy Studies (SI) is ideally positioned to play a leadership role in strengthening the national agenda for next generation research in tobacco control.

The SI Vision:

1. to stimulate innovative research ideas in tobacco control, from basic and applied science to policy
2. to conduct research that has clear and specific public health impact in reducing smoking prevalence

SI Strategic Priorities:

1. Identify research priorities that are key leverage points for the entire tobacco control research community.
   
   The SI will work collaboratively to stimulate research that will reduce tobacco use prevalence more efficiently. Our aim is to serve a convening “think-tank” role to speed high risk innovative new research priorities. Science must keep pace with a rapidly changing landscape of scientific discovery, technological advancements, consumer demands, and dramatic shifts in tobacco industry products and marketing. The SI will work with the research and practice communities, public, private, government, insurers, policymakers, philanthropy and other stakeholders to support an innovative and forward-thinking research agenda.
   
2. Conduct basic, applied, and policy research that can be harnessed to reduce tobacco use prevalence.
   
   Reducing tobacco use prevalence will require advances in both the basic and applied science of dissemination. Perhaps the most pressing challenge to the field is to understand how to move basic and clinical research out of the laboratory and into the real-world more effectively and efficiently to inform a coherent, unified national cessation strategy.
   
   “…a national system for intervention must be seen at the policy level as a long term investment, to become part of the fabric of a nationwide long-term health and health care policy.” (Orleans and Alper (2003)
   
   This kind of systems integration is arguably the most critical missing ingredient needed to maximize the public health impact of the enormous tobacco research, practice, and policy knowledge-base.  The creation of The SI affords an extraordinary opportunity to capitalize on lessons learned in the field, to identify strategic directions for tobacco control research and policy, and to tackle some of the daunting challenges to advance tobacco control research from discovery to delivery.
